How can I get to Ace Academy or where do I park?
Ace Academy is conveniently located on 347-349 Parramatta road and you can get there in 10-15 mins by buses such as 480, 413, 440 from Central station or alternatively, it is a 13 min walk from Petersham station.
If you’re driving, we recommend first checking Hay street for their free car parking or Marion street carpark or the 2h free sheltered parking at Norton Street Plaza where Coles and Harris farms located. (NOT the Italian forum)
How much are classes? I’m not ready to commit to a contract yet, what are my options?
Our membership options are conveniently located on our website. If you are not ready to commit to a contract, you can contact our team and we can work something out!
Remember that all new clients have a FREE week trial that includes uniform hire for gi classes!
If I have a medical condition or injury, can I still join the classes?
We recommend getting clearance from a medical professional before you engage in our jiujitsu classes and also let our instructor know beforehand.
We will do our best in accommodating jiujitsu for everybody’s needs and other practitioners are also more than happy to help out as we understand that jiujitsu is a fun martial art and everybody should get something out of it!

Which class should I choose for my child?
We have 2 distinct categories for kids classes:
Mini aces for 4-7 year olds
Little aces for 7-12 year oldsThis is a rough guide and you are welcome to give us a call or contact us to find out which class suits your child best!
We have a FREE week trial for all new clients to try it out before committing to a membership.
I don't have a uniform, can my child still participate in the trial class?
Yes! At Ace Academy, all new clients have a FREE week trial that includes uniform hire for kids classes!
After the free trial, we recommend that your child purchase their own gi's for their use. We sell gi's in our gym or alternatively, you can also purchase your own gi online or elsewhere.
If neither option suits you, we continue to rent gi's after the free trial for a small fee.My child is under 4. Can they still participate in the Mini Aces classes?
Yes! If your child is under 4 and they are able to focus, complete movement drills and follow the class, they are definitely eligible to join our Mini Aces classes. The best way is to try it out in our FREE week trial.
My child is 6 turning 7, which class should they join?
We suggest trying both classes and starting out with the Mini Aces classes as its a lower barrier of entry to Jiujitsu. If they want more focus on Jiujitsu, they are welcome to try the Little Aces instead! Or alternatively, they could do both classes.
My child is over 12, can they still do the Little Aces class?
Yes, the ages are just a guideline and your child is welcome to join the Little Aces classes until about 14 or 15 where they would probably progress into the adults classes if they so choose to!

Can I join the classes without any jiujitsu experience?
Yes, you absolutely can! We recommend booking in and attending the intro class as it would be a 30 min class that gives you the basics and helps you wrap your head around what jiujitsu is.
If you already have some prior experience or are unable to make the intro class slot, you are more than welcome to just jump into a class as our instructors will help your integrate and understand the beauty of our martial art.
Do I need to be fit to keep up or join the classes?
While it would be helpful to have a baseline of fitness, our classes are tailored to be accessible to most people and you would not be forced to do any physical exertion or positions that you deem that you are unable to. Communicate with our instructor and your training partners and we are more than happy to accommodate!
The more you come to jiujitsu classes, the more you’ll be able to build up your general fitness and enjoy the martial art!
I’m afraid that I’ll be clueless and impede the progress of the class or those around me. Help!
Attending the intro class would help you wrap your head around things but jiujitsu classes can be confusing and intimidating at times and we at Ace Academy understand that. Rest assured that our instructors will be accommodating to your needs and help guide you through every step of the class and other practitioners were once beginners like you! We all understand how confusing things can be and us more advanced practitioners are more than happy to help out so don’t feel bad at all!
What should I bring to the classes?
For starters, we suggest bringing some water and comfortable gear that you would wear to the gym. If you require more water or do not have a bottle, we have bottles of water on sale at the gym and a tap to fill up more water as you need!
We also suggest a mouthguard (gumshield) during rolling to prevent expensive accidents but they are completely optional!
Do I need to buy any uniforms or gear to start?
For the gi classes, you require a gi or kimono to attend the classes and if you do not have one of your own, you are welcome to rent one of ours! This rental service is FREE for all who are on their week trial and will incur a small fee otherwise.
For nogi, you can wear any regular gear that you would normally wear to the gym!
We also sell high quality gi and nogi gear at Ace Academy so ask our friendly staff if you need some!
Should I start in gi or nogi? Whats the difference?
The best answer to that is to attend whichever and as many classes as your personal schedule allows for! At Ace Academy, we focus on both gi and nogi styles and the more classes you attend, the more you understand what jiujitsu is about and have more fun!
The difference is between gi and nogi is the uniforms that we wear for the classes and it results in different styles of grappling. In the gi, you are allowed to grab and manipulate your opponent with their fabric while in nogi, you are not allowed to grab the fabric.

Can I wear my existing gear? What are the uniform policies at Ace Academy?
We do not have a uniform policy as Ace Academy as we believe that jiujitsu should be as accessible to as many people as possible. We do not mind at all if you use your exising gear with logos from another gym to train!
Same goes with colours, we do not have any restrictions and we love that people are free to wear whatever colours they want!
If you do want to use a blank gi, we sell high quality gear as well. Ask our friendly staff for more info!
Are there any rules regarding illegal techniques?
We here at Ace Academy support safe training for all as we want to be physically safe so that we can return safely to our jobs, families and train regularly.
This means that we have to ban certain techniques that are more likely to injure others so that we can all feel safe and support one another in our jiujitsu journeys.
Techniques that are completely banned:
- Jumping guard from standing position (includes opponent holding a single leg)
- Jumping scissor takedown (includes opponent holding a single leg)
- Flying triangle or flying armbars from standing (includes opponent holding a single leg)
- Slamming out of submissions or any other position (e.g guard or back) and slamming onto the head
- Submissions forcefully applied that do not give your partner time to tap or are intended to hurt themTechniques that are conditionally banned (Ask your partner if they are willing to do these):
- Heel hooks, reaping in nogi only (completely banned in the gi)
- Leg locks (e.g. Knee bars, toeholds, etc) adjusted for the lower belt. (e.g. A brown belt who rolls with a purple belt should not go for leg locks)Can I drop in if I train at another gym?
Yes of course! We welcome visitors and are more than happy if you could join our classes or open mats!
Will I get to roll much during a class?
Yes, we are big believers in rolling as soon and as much as possible because not only does rolling help us apply and learn the techniques with immediate feedback, it is also the most fun part of doing jiujitsu!
During evening classes, we have dedicated rolling times so you’ll get at least around 30 mins of rolling! Other 1h long classes usually set aside 15-20 mins of positional training or rolling at the end of the class.
